"The archipelago of Santorini is the most southern and at the same time the most extraordinary Cyclades island of Greece - like out of a picture book of clichés".
Through the "Minoan eruption", a tremendous volcanic eruption about 3'600 years ago, Santorini got its sickle-like shape. The consequences of this volcanic eruption are still remembered by the unusual rock relief, with cliffs up to 380m high in the caldera (crater). Besides the unique natural features, the architectural picture of Santorini is also remarkable. Angled, narrow alleys and stairways lead past cube-shaped white houses and blue church domes.
"The formation of volcanic cones, cliffs, lava beaches, blue church roofs, whitewashed houses and volcanic soil, offers a breathtaking backdrop".
Santorini had many names. It was called Strogili "the round one" because of its original round shape, later it got the name Kallisti which means "the most beautiful". The island got the name Thira "the wild" at the end of the 12th century BC from the Dorians who named the island after their king Theras. The name Santorini was then given by the crusaders after a chapel of Saint Irene (Santa Irini-Santorini), which is located in Riba on Thirasia.
Today the official name of the island is Thira, but it is mainly known as Santorini.
"Even today, anyone who enters the island will understand why Santorini was called 'the most beautiful' and 'the wildest'."
The volcanic island Santorini consists of 5 small islands; Thira - the main island with the airport, Thirasia - the sister of Thira (Sia means sister in Greek), Aspronisi - the white island (Aspro = white, Nisi = island) and the two volcanic islands in the caldera (crater) Nea and Palea Kammeni. Only the two islands Thira and Thirasia are inhabited.
Santorini also has a lot to offer from a culinary point of view. The grapes for the deliciously sweet dessert wine "Vin Santo" are just one of the plants that thrive in the volcanic soils of the archipelago. White aubergines, pistachios, fava (yellow flat peas) and small sweet tomatoes are among the local delicacies.
